🖼️ Google Messed Up AI Image Generation

Just days after releasing their new updates with Gemini, Google announced that the company is pausing Gemini’s ability to generate images of people. Google received a lot of heat after the model kept overcorrecting for diversity in its outputs.

The details:

  • Gemini tried to change how it generates images to forcibly include diverse people. This got a lot of attention on the internet because the pictures were not always historically correct, and it was hard to generate pictures of white people.
  • Google announced they didn’t do a good job of making sure the pictures showed everyone fairly. They emphasized how it’s important to have pictures of all different kinds of people.
  • Google has stopped letting Gemini generate pictures of people for now. They said they will fix it and make it available again soon.

Our take: Making sure AI companies are fair and do the right thing is really hard. The story with Gemini shows why it's so important for AI to be open and not too strict. As AI makes more stuff we see and use, it has a big power to change what people think. This means it's super important for AI to stay fair and not pick sides.

💰 Groq's super fast AI processor goes viral

AI startup Groq (which is different from Elon's Grok), is getting a lot of attention because they've made some cool technology. They've created special computer parts that make big AI programs work super fast, almost with no waiting at all.

The details:

  • Groq uses a special kind of computer brain called LPU, which is different from the usual GPU. This makes things work faster and better.
  • Tests showed that Groq’s technology can handle 500 pieces of information every second, which is a lot faster than the 30-50 pieces that an older AI version, GPT 3.5, can do.
  • When Groq and GPT 3.5 were tested side by side with the same task, Groq was about 4 times quicker.
  • Groq, which started in 2016, told Elon Musk’s company X to stop using the name ‘Grok’ for its chatbot in November because it was too similar to their name.

Our Take: Groq's technology is so fast, that you almost have to see it with your own eyes to believe it. It's like when you see a super fast sports car for the first time and think about all the places you could go with it. Plus, their LPUs (special computer parts) could be a cheaper and just as good option instead of the traditional GPUs.
